What It Involves
Why I became a Franciscan Associate
By Mary Jo Catalano
I became involved with the Joliet Franciscans through my
friend, Marcy Van Natta. We have been friends for many years.
Marcy invited me to attend Mass with her at Our Lady of
Angels. That is where I met the Franciscan Sisters.
I was born and raised in the Catholic Church. My family
attended Mass weekly and participated in weekly family
devotions. My sister and I attended Catholic schools and took
part in all the extracurricular activities. The Catholic faith was a
mainstay of our family.
As I began attending Mass at OLA, I started to feel more drawn to the
Franciscans. I was introduced to several of the sisters and found them to be very
welcoming, kind, and peaceful. I knew then what was missing in my life.
At this point Marcy asked me if I had ever considered the Associate Relationship.
Because of our friendship and her commitment to the Franciscans, I was drawn even
closer. Spirituality is at the core of my faith, and I feel that it has been strengthened by
my association with the Franciscans.
When I decided to become an Associate, COVID-19 reared its ugly head. I
became an “Associate in Waiting.” At this point I was invited into the prayer group to
which Marcy belongs. My spiritualty was enhanced by learning to pray from the heart,
not just formal prayers.
Soon after I was introduced to Father Jim Lennon. He counseled me on my faith
journey and encouraged me to pursue the Associate Relationship. I am forever grateful
for that opportunity; my life is forever changed for the better.
I was finally able to formalize my commitment with the Associate Relationship
in June during the Congregation gathering.By: Associate Lynette Shea
